Geriatric therapy
What is geriatric therapy?
Although ageing is a part of nature, a phase we must all go through, it does present a majority of challenges in terms of our emotional, physical and mental health. As people approach what we consider our “golden years,” fear and anxiety may kick in. Dreading the mental and physical effects of ageing is typical but should not replace the joy of ageing gracefully and enjoying the fruits of your labour. Some of the issues the elderly face when approaching retirement age are fear of the unknown, dealing with chronic illnesses and severe neurological conditions such as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
What are neurological-related conditions?
The elderly are more susceptible to neurological impairment as a result of brain-related conditions that include Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, neuropathy and stroke. Alzheimer’s disease is a subtype of dementia that is characterised by memory loss, unusual behaviour and pattern of thought. The assistance of a caregiver is requested when symptoms of Alzheimer’s become so severe that ordinary tasks are almost impossible to carry out. Changes within the brain that cause dementia prompt irreversible memory loss and cognitive decline. People living with dementia will struggle to take care of themselves and may need help with routine tasks. This can be difficult to deal with and requires constant psychological care for both the individual and loved ones involved.
What does geriatric therapy cover?
Apart from a neurological impairment, geriatric therapy treats anxiety and stress due to discrimination in the workplace as a result of ageism. Older people also face pressure that arises from expectations in terms of a demanding lifestyle or responsibilities that they have.
Older individuals face problems that involve:
- Hearing and eyesight
- Memory
- Energy levels
- Eating patterns
- Strength
Whereas these are physical concerns, their mental capacity and psychological health may deteriorate in the process. Geriatric therapy prevents psychological and cognitive decline by prioritising the care of the elderly.
